Student Investigator Grants

First Call for

Student Lectures and Posters

As part of its mission, the WOC Trust is pleased to announce that it will sponsor grants for outstanding young orchid researchers at WOCs.

The 24th WOC grants will be offered to students to present their research to the general orchid public either as a lecture and/or as a poster at the WOC.  Students are encouraged to compete for the grants established according to their educational status.

These grants recognize young, promising researchers whose studies advance the field of Orchidology. These studies will demonstrate the latest trends in the following categories:

·       Basic and Applied Research in Orchidology

·       Orchid Conservation

·       General Horticultural Education in Orchids

Eligibility

1.     Applicants must currently be enrolled in a high school, college, graduate school, or postdoctoral fellowship within an academic program.

2.     Applicants must be the primary researcher for the study at the time of submission and be primarily responsible for the research described.

3.     Applicants wishing to compete must provide a letter affirming their academic qualifications from their academic advisor/sponsor/institution.  This letter must accompany their presentation application.  For further information, contact Dr. Yin-Tung Wang at yintung.wang@gmail.com.

4.     The research must be presented by its applicant at the 24th WOC to receive the grant.

Research Description

All applications must be accompanied by a letter from the presenter’s scientific advisor confirming the presenter’s academic status.  The letter will note specific contributions, significance, and distinguishing work meriting grant consideration.

Details & Conditions

Successful presenters will be selected by a panel of host organizers and the WOC Trust Science and Education Committee members.  They are expected to present their posters and/or lectures at the conference.  Their submitted abstracts will be in the 24th WOC Handbook and published in the Proceedings.   Successful applicants will have their conference registration fees waived.

The host organizers and WOC Trust Science & Education Committee will request permission to publish the research as a full paper in the WOC Proceedings and the WOC Trust’s website. Recipients will be listed on the website. This will include those who do not want their research published.

Whether to award grants rests with host organizers and the WOC Trust Science & Education Committee.

A maximum of two grants within each category may be awarded.  When warranted, all of the grants may not be given.  The WOC Trust will invite a Keynote speaker.
